Rutherford’s gold-foil experiment

An α source in a lead block shoots a collimated beam at a thin gold foil inside a vacuum chamber. Nearly all α particles pass straight through; a few deflect; about 1 in 8000 bounces back — the signature of a tiny, dense, positively charged nucleus.
