Neutron multiplication: subcritical, critical, supercritical

Each ²³⁵U fission releases about 2.5 neutrons, but leakage and capture mean only k of them cause the next generation. The curve shows the neutron population generation by generation: k < 1 dies out, k = 1 is steady (a reactor), k > 1 grows exponentially.
