Plasmon colour of gold nanoparticles

Absorbance spectra of gold sols of increasing particle diameter. Small spheres absorb green light (~520 nm), so the sol looks ruby red. Growth shifts and broadens the plasmon band; aggregation adds a long-wavelength tail.
