Measuring a half-life, and using it for dating

Red: fraction of parent nuclei remaining; blue: fraction decayed. Each nuclide carries marks at 1, 2 and 3 half-lives — hover the red curve to read the time and check that it halves every T½. Pick the nuclide whose T½ matches the timescale you want to date.
