A [2]catenane: the mechanical bond

Two macrocycles interlocked like chain links — no covalent bond holds them, yet they cannot separate without breaking a ring. Rotate slowly: ring B threads through ring A. Stimuli (redox, pH, light) can drive one ring to circumrotate around the other — the working stroke of a molecular machine.
