A superheavy-element production line

Follow one atom from ion source to detector: a ⁴⁸Ca beam is accelerated onto a spinning ²⁴⁹Cf target, rare fusion recoils are separated from the beam, and a silicon detector reads the α-decay chain that identifies a new element. Weeks of beam may yield only a few atoms.
