Nobel Chemistry 2023
Russian physicist who first observed quantum-size effects in semiconductor nanocrystals embedded in glass, the discovery underlying quantum dots.
Nobel Prize work
In 1981, working at the Vavilov State Optical Institute, he discovered that semiconductor nanocrystals grown in glass show size-dependent optical absorption — the first observation of quantum confinement in what are now called quantum dots. His discovery, shared with Louis Brus and Moungi Bawendi, launched quantum-dot science and its applications in displays, imaging and photonics.
