Nobel Chemistry 2019

Identified oxide cathodes that made lithium-ion batteries practical and shared the 2019 prize.

Nobel Prize work

For the development of lithium-ion batteries. In 1980 Goodenough showed that layered lithium cobalt oxide, LiCoOX2\ce{LiCoO2}, is a cathode that reversibly releases and re-accepts lithium ions at about 4 V — doubling the cell voltage of the day and enabling the compact batteries commercialized a decade later. He later identified further key cathode materials such as LiMnX2OX4\ce{LiMn2O4} spinels and LiFePOX4\ce{LiFePO4}, and remained active in solid-state battery research past age 95.
