For the directed evolution of enzymes. Arnold's method mimics natural selection in the test tube: random mutagenesis of the enzyme's gene, screening of the mutant library for a desired activity, then iteration of the cycle. Evolved enzymes now catalyze reactions nature never invented — forming bonds such as C–Si — and are produced industrially to manufacture drugs and biofuels more sustainably.
