Shared the 2013 prize for multiscale models of complex chemical systems and gave the Karplus equation used in NMR.

For the development of multiscale models for complex chemical systems. Karplus co-authored the first molecular dynamics simulation of a protein (1977) and helped pioneer QM/MM methods that treat the reactive core with quantum mechanics while the surroundings follow classical force fields, opening the way to realistic simulations of enzymes and biomolecules.
