Nobel Chemistry 2023
French-Tunisian-American chemist at MIT whose synthesis made quantum dots a practical, tunable material.
Nobel Prize work
Shared the prize with Louis Brus and Alexei Ekimov for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots. Bawendi invented a hot-injection method that grows nanocrystals of controlled size, so their colour can be tuned by quantum confinement — the basis of QD displays and imaging.

Nanoscale dimensions reshape optical response: metal particles support localized plasmons, while semiconductor quantum dots show size-dependent electronic transitions.
