Swiss organic chemist who determined the structures of carotenoids, flavins and vitamins A and B2, and achieved the synthesis of riboflavin.
Nobel Prize work
Karrer unravelled the constitutions of the carotenoids — plant pigments such as carotene — and of the flavins, and established the structures of vitamins A and B2 (riboflavin), which he also synthesized. His work linked coloured natural pigments to essential nutrients.
