Robert S. Mulliken
1896–1986 · United States · Born in the 1800s
Nobel Chemistry 1966
Developed molecular orbital theory, describing bonding through orbitals spread over whole molecules.
Nobel Prize work
Mulliken turned molecular spectroscopy into a theory of electronic structure: he systematized molecular orbitals, introduced orbital labels (, ), population analysis and electronegativity scales, and developed LCAO descriptions of chemical bonds. His molecular orbital theory explained the spectra and bonding of small molecules and gave chemists a common quantum language. The prize recognized this fundamental framework of quantum chemistry.
