British-American chemist who invented the rechargeable lithium battery through reversible ion intercalation.

At Exxon in the 1970s Whittingham built the first rechargeable lithium battery, pairing a lithium-metal anode with a titanium disulfide cathode into which lithium ions reversibly intercalate. The intercalation concept he demonstrated became the working principle of every lithium-ion battery, realised commercially by Goodenough and Yoshino.
