Problem 1

A mixture of hydrogen and chlorine kept in a closed flask at constant temperature was irradiated by scattered light. After a certain time the chlorine content had decreased by 20 % compared with that of the starting mixture, and the resulting mixture had the composition: 60 volume % chlorine, 10 volume % hydrogen and 30 volume % hydrogen chloride. (a) What was the composition of the initial gaseous mixture? (b) How are chlorine, hydrogen and hydrogen chloride produced industrially?
Step 1 of 3: Chlorine and hydrogen consumed
V(HCl)=30 vol. parts⇒V(HX2)=V(ClX2)=15 vol. parts consumedV(\ce{HCl}) = 30\ \text{vol.\,parts} \Rightarrow V(\ce{H2}) = V(\ce{Cl2}) = 15\ \text{vol.\,parts consumed}
Analysis

The reaction HX2+ClX2→2 HCl\ce{H2 + Cl2 -> 2HCl} consumes equal volumes of H2 and Cl2, so 30 parts of HCl required 15 parts of each reactant.
