Nobel Chemistry 1978
British biochemist whose chemiosmotic theory explained how mitochondria and chloroplasts convert electron flow into a proton gradient that drives ATP synthesis.
Nobel Prize work
His chemiosmotic theory proposed that respiratory and photosynthetic electron transport chains pump protons across a membrane, storing energy as an electrochemical gradient (proton-motive force) that ATP synthase taps. Initially controversial, it was confirmed by experiment and became the accepted mechanism of biological energy transduction.
